Moffatt Bible App Free Church OfJames Moffatt (1870-1944) Born and educated in Glasgow, Scotland, Moffatt spent the early years of his career as a pastor in the Free Church of Scotland. In 1911 he became Professor of Greek and New Testament Exegesis at Mansfield College, Oxford, and subsequently served at the United Free Church College, Glasgow, and at Union Theological Seminary, New York, as Washburn Professor of Church History. Moffatt took a leading role in the preparation of the Revised Standard Version (1946) as well as writing numerous books on biblical textual criticism. His New Testament was printed in 1913, followed by the Old Testament in 1924. Both translations were revised and reprinted together in 1935 and popularly known as Moffatts Bible. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. This hard-cover is well priced and was brought to my door promptly. Could have done without the previous owners handwriting on the inside front and back covers, but otherwise unmarked for a used book. I can sort of see why C.S. Lewis and many others valued this translation. Its literary, lyrical, powerful, even if idiosyncratic, particularly in the unexplained transposition of text. The paragraphs flow without being broken up by verse numbers (the verses are indicated in the margins). In his Preface to the Revised and Final Edition Moffatt explains the use of italics in the New Testament, but does not explain what it denotes in the Old, nor his use of parenthetical marks. His footnotes on his translations from the koine Greek and occasional Aramaic in the New Testament are fascinating (and replete with references to other scholars), even for one who does not know Greek. I was also interested to learn, from the brief bio on the back cover, that Moffatt was Washburn Professor of Church History at New York Citys Union Theological Seminary.
